Description
The Cinema of Barbara Kopple
This issue is published in conjunction with the 67th edition of the Festival dei Popoli – the Florence-based international documentary film festival (31 October to 8 November 2026) – under the artistic directorship of Alessandro Stellino and Claudia Maci’s management, with Festival President Roberto Ferrari. This publication’s principal essay, “The Labour Trilogy: Fifty Years of Working-Class History” (pp. 7 to 21) is by Ludovica Fales, curator for the FdP’s Barbara Kopple Tribute. It is part of a collaboration between Festival dei Popoli and Calliope Arts Foundation, within the framework of ‘Women Trailblazers in Documentary Cinema’, a project and award aimed at rediscovering and celebrating female directors, whose work has been undervalued or forgotten. Barbara Kopple is the first filmmaker to receive the award.
