Rosano is a country village 25 minutes to the east of Florence, home to the tenth-century Santa Maria abbey frequented by Pope Francis who sought peace and quietude here. It’s also home to a popular coffee shop/grocery store, La Bottega a Rosano.

Opened in 1989, over the years the Lazzeri family have established a thriving business selling local produce ranging from in-season vegetables to prosciutti and cheeses. During the week locals pop by the Bottega for a primo at lunchtime and coffee at all times of the day, while Florentines and tourists flock at weekends for lunch, a panino on their travels, or even a slice of the homemade cakes. (Our editor-in-chief is unable to resist the chocolate and ricotta cake!) In the summer months, there’s a cosy trattoria with an outside terrace, open for lunch every day and on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Co-owners Damiano Lazzeri and Matteo Trapassi are members of the Chianti Rufina winemaking association. Every week they organize wine tasting sessions with explanations of local labels, expertly and lovingly served with an abundance of delicious specialities, such as hams, salami, cheeses, olives and various types of bread and schiacciata. The wine corner at the Bottega is a permanent fixture, beckoning with its Bacchus gems.

La Bottega a Rosano is like stepping back in time to eat and drink the very best that the surrounding land has to offer. Plus, it’s the perfect spot to people watch as locals go about their daily life.
