(UPDATED Dec 29) The city of Florence always puts on a good party for New Years in its various piazzas,
each by musical type. The major’s blog says the programme starts at 9am and goes ‘until late’. We are unable to provide more specific information about timing at the moment. The line-up for December 31 2011 has been confirmed:

In addition, two big classical music gala events are planned: at St.
Mark’s Anglican Church, the Operetta Gala will feature not only selected acts
from Verdi’s La Traviata, Bizet’s Carmen, Die Fledermaus by Johann Strauss and others, but also canapées and champagne (www.concertoclassico.info);
the 10-day not-so-sneak preview of the new Teatro dell’Opera di Firenze ends
with a rousing ringing in of the the new year as orchestra director Zubin Mehta
conducts pieces by Beethoven, Ravel and Rimskij-Korsakov (www.maggiofiorentino.com;

Privately organized parties with big dinners and loud dance music also abound. All
the major dance clubs (Tenax, Pink, etc.) and some private venues offer
packages ranging from dinner to midnight toast only.
Public transportation: downtown will be closed off and much parking eliminated starting at 7:30pm on Dec 31 and continuing until 8am on Jan 1. The tram will run all night with a frequency of every 9 minutes, with the head of the line Stazione Leopolda, from which there will be a shuttle bus. ATAF bus lines will STOP running at 9pm; the last access to the train station will be at 8pm. There will be four free shuttle busses running every 20 minutes starting at 9:30pm, running the following routes: Parterre-San Marco; piazza Ferrucci-Biblioteca nazionale; piazza Puccini-Porta al Prato; Porta Romana-piazza Frescobaldi.
The SMN train station will close at 0:30am on Jan 1 and reopen at 4:30am, so using local trains, for example from SMN to Campo di Marte, to get home after the concerts is not an option. The TAXI services will be offering increased car availability.
