Good news for cyclists in Lucca. To combat a problem with bike thefts—common across Tuscany—Lucca’s town council has decided to launch the Bici Sicura [Secure Bikes] initiative.

Using a system installed on the bike, Bici Sicura is designed as both a deterrent and an aid to recovery should the bike be stolen.

Lucca’s police force will purchase 1,000 kits containing a personalized, burglar-proof registration plate, handbook and information about using the Bici Sicura online reporting system. The service will users cost 6 euro per bike.

Lucca’s councillor for security Francesco Raspini commented, ‘Bike thefts are on the increase. The council aims to encourage alternative forms of transit to car travel, such as the use of bikes for short and medium distances. Of course it is essential that we find solutions that enable citizens to move around town and beyond while feeling safe.’

On February 15, 2014, Lucca town council will be holding an information day in the town centre to introduce the new system and install the first registration plates.
