By 2017, Florence’s long-awaited tram system should be complete, city officials have announced.

Once completed, the system will include lines running as far as Campi Bisenzio and Sesto Fiorentino. The Scandicci line will be extended to Bagno a Ripoli.

It is estimated that the system will move some 40 million riders annually and that the convenience of the tram system will take countless cars off the roads in and around Florence.

The plans, signed a month ago, were discussed at Palazzo Strozzi Sacrati in the presence of local mayors and transport ministers. With the prospect of the 2018 G8 summit being held in Florence, the plan calls for completion by 2017.

The cost of the line from Bagno a Ripoli is estimated to be between 378 million euro, a sum that could reach 383 million for the completion of lines 2 and 3, which will add another 11 kilometres, approximately 12 and 20 stops, respectively, from Santa Maria Novella station to Careggi hospital and from piazza della Libertà to Florence’s Peretola airport.
