Scuola del Cuoio was founded following the Second World War through the collaborative efforts of the Franciscan friars of the monastery of Santa Croce and the Gori and Casini families, Florentine leather artisans since the 1930s. Their mission was to give war orphans a means to learn a practical trade with which to earn a living.

Marcello Gori and Silvano Casini brought their master craftsmen to Scuola del Cuoio to teach these youngsters the leather craft trade. Scuola del Cuoio today remains the largest authentic leather laboratory in Florence as well as an unparalleled leather school where students from all over the world learn how to make handbags from scratch.

Now, Scuola Del Cuoio is proud to announce its first award ceremony, which will be held on June 15.

Students attending the six-month course will compete with each other to come up with the best design. The student judged to have created the best bag will win a two-month internship at the Scuola del Cuoio workshop to learn from the master craftsmen and the opportunity to have his or her bag design featured in a forthcoming Scuola del Cuoio collection, complete with the student’s name.

The jury will consist of members of the Gori family and the teaching staff who assisted the students in their six-month course. The decision will be based on a public vote too. Scuola del Cuoio will post pictures of the students’ bags on its official Instagram and Facebook pages from June 1 to 14. So, everyone will be able to have their say!

This is Scuola Del Cuoio’s way of demonstrating, yet again, its commitment to continuing the great tradition of Florentine craftsmanship among young people from all over the world.
