It’s the first exhibition in Italy by the “painter” (as she wanted to be called), MARIA LASSNIG, a pioneering Austrian artist in the feminist movement within visual arts.

One of the most important artists of the second half of the 20th century, Maria Lassnig (1919-2014) earned recognition for her role in this artistic era towards the end of her life, in 2013, when she was awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the 55th Venice Biennale.

The exhibition Woman Power, running from March 25 to June 25 in the Andito degli Angiolini at Palazzo Pitti, presents 25 of her works, offering a sample of her artistic production.

Promoted by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, with the Uffizi Gallery, the Albertina in Vienna, the Maria Lassnig Foundation and Firenze Musei, the exhibition brings together select works from her vast career, spanning from the 1960s to the first ten years of the new millennium, and offers a significant glimpse into the formal evolution of the artist.

A fundamental element and central theme to Lassnig’s works is her body, her person, with works that are in large part self-portraits, not meant to be vain but rather exactly the opposite.

Her self-representation is, as the artist herself stated, “loneliness of the critic, inability to exploit others, meditation and laying a scientific scalpel to a willing subject, the self.

The emblematic work highlighting her involvement in the quest for female emancipation, Woman Power, will be on display, its name inspiring the exhibition’s title.

Maria Lassnig – Woman Power is the second exhibition that the Uffizi Gallery annually dedicates to women artists.

For 2017, the past is represented by the Renaissance nun, Plautilla Nelli, her work on view at the Uffizi, and the present day by Maria Lassnig, at Palazzo Pitti.

Until June 25
