The sixth edition of the nine day long contemporary performance festival sees dance, music, art and cinema interact with the landscape of Florence. Architecture is transformed by innovative works that surprise and dazzle. Secret Florence is carried out by Fabbrica Europa, Lo Schermo dell Arte, Musicus Concentus, Tempo Reale and the Virgilio Sieni National Dance Production Center in a series of events that adapt to the architecture and acoustic features of each space.

Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger (Florence 1568 – 1647) The Cult of Memory is curated by Alessandro Cecchi, Elena Lombardi and Riccardo Spinelli, and explores the cultural legacy of Leonardo di Buonarrota, Michelangelo’s great-nephew. Born in 1568, four years after the death of his renowned relative, Michelangelo the Younger became a notable figure in his own right in the 17th century, becoming a favourite of the Grand Duchess Cristina di Lorena and a personal friend of the Grand Duke Cosimo II de ‘Medici. He was responsible for the construction of the current headquarters of the Casa Buonarroti Foundation in via Ghibellina, converting it into a museum dedicated to his illustrious forefather as well as displaying works by other major artists active in Florence in the Grand Duchy in the early-mid 17th century. The exhibition explore Michelangelo the Younger’s work as a curator, man of letters, poet, and his various other endeavours which led to this collection of first editions, preparatory drawings, and paintings. Tickets cost from 5-8 euro.

FOODANDFUN/ First floor of Mercato Centrale reopens

The dining-events space

 

 

Foodies rejoice as the first floor of the Mercato Centrale finally reopens. Two new eateries join the market: Ciccio Vitiello’s pizza and Martina Brilli and Gabrio Scaranari’s fried food. As always, the spot offers much more than just food, with DJ Matteo Zarcone livening up the opening from 6.30-8.30pm. The Italy-Turkey European Championship match will also see several promotions on offer. Opening hours 10am-midnight.

COLOUR/ AniMA: The Magic of Animated Cinema from Snow White to Grendizer

More than 500 illustrations from the AniMA Firenze collection at the NEMO Academy will be on display at Palazzo Medici Riccardi, featuring works donated by well-known international artists such as Sandra Cleuzo (Disney, DreamWorks and Warner Bros animator). From Disney originals to Hanny & Barbera with plenty of Japanese anime in between, the works are bound to send fans into a frenzy. The magic of animated cinema brings about nostalgia and undoubtedly fires up the imagination with original drawings on show such as Mickey Mouse from the 1930s. Curated by Luca Chiarotti, Sandro Cleuzo, Federica Fabbri and Francesco Mariotti, delight in the illustrations from films cherished in childhood and beyond.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

Locally based author Baret Magarian hosts his latest book release at Il Conventino Caffè Letterario (via Giano della Bella 20) on June 15 at 6pm. The book titled ‘Le Macchinazioni’ will be presented with the author in attendance, and Marco Incardona. Readings of the text will be performed by actors Chiara de Palo and Marco di Stefano.
