Netflix‘s political thriller The Diplomat is shooting its fourth season in Tuscany, with filming across Lucca and Florence scheduled from May 13 through June.

Production crews are expected at several of Lucca’s most storied locations: piazza Napoleone, porta San Pietro, piazza San Frediano, piazza Anfiteatro, piazza Guidiccioni and via Sant’Andrea. The scale of the shoot prompted the Municipality of Lucca to approve an agreement with the production company to regulate permits and use of public spaces, with road closures, parking restrictions and controlled-access zones already in effect across parts of the city. The production is being supported by the Toscana Film Commission.
Specific Florence locations remain under wraps, though the crew is reportedly using Teatro Luxury Apartments – Starhotels Collezione (the “black cube”) as its base.
Starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell, The Diplomat follows U.S. ambassador Kate Wyler as she navigates international crises, political intrigue and a complicated marriage. Created by Debora Cahn, the series has become one of Netflix’s most-watched prestige dramas, known for its sharp dialogue and fondness for grand European settings, which likely explains Tuscany’s appeal.
Tuscany has quietly become one of Europe’s go-to filming destinations, with productions including Succession, 6 Underground and more recently La Dolce Villa and The Decameron drawn to the region by its architecture, landscapes and generous tax incentives. The arrival of The Diplomat has already stirred local excitement and some confusion, with residents initially mistaking it for Netflix’s separately filming Assassin’s Creed series, which began shooting in Italy in March and has also been linked to locations in Tuscany.
