Pitti Uomo 92 kicks off with SONICS performance

Pitti Uomo, the international menswear fair par excellence, begins today at the Fortezza da Basso, but most shows and parties are closed to the public. Last night, however, the public got in on all the pageantry with a performance by Italian acrobatic troupe SONICS in piazza Pitti. Titled “Meraviglia Water and Flames” and sponsored by the Centro di Firenze per la Moda Italiana, the show brought a mesmerized mass of residents, tourists, press and VIP guests to the square. In addition to ushering in the fashionable festivities (which run from June 13-16), the show was a ceremonious way of inaugurating the temporary Museo Effimero della Moda (Ephemeral “Museum” of Fashion), which opens today in the converted Galleria del Costume rooms of Palazzo Pitti.
