Fresh fish has found a new home at Da’ Pescatore, in piazza del Carmine.

Famous among Florentines for his refined way with fish and seafood, chef Daniele Pescatore has moved from his former restaurant, Il Cenacolo del Pescatore in borgo Ognissanti, to the Oltrarno and one of Florence’s favourite neighbourhood piazzas, right beside the Santa Maria Carmine basilica and its sublime Brancacci Chapel.

Passionate and personable, Pescatore explains his approach: ‘It’s all about technique: barbecuing, frying, steaming, sous-vide, smoking, no-cook. It’s not about serving sea bass as opposed to chicken, but about offering the same, or similar, ingredients cooked in completely different ways.’

The menu at Da’ Pescatore presents a wide range of choices. À la carte first courses, for example, include exquisitely daring combinations such as zolfini beans with mussels and Nerano-style risotto (in Nerano, near Naples, the dish is prepared with spaghetti, not rice) made from courgettes and a variety of cheeses. Or diners can simply trust the chef and opt for one of his tasting menus: three courses for 35 euro or five for 55.

The venue—it was once an Anglican church—vaunts a unique interior with delightful ecclesiastical touches. More recently, the space housed fashionista haunt Cavalli Club, then GRIF Glamour Restaurant in Florence.

Now, Florence’s foremost fish chef has put the spotlight back onto the food.
