The Uffizi’s Edoardo Detti room and Sala del Camino are currently hosting an exhibition spotlighting 17th-century Bolognese painter Elisabetta Sirani: Painting and drawing like a great master: Elisabetta Sirani’s talents. In light of the recent sudden death of Fiorentina football captain Davide Astori, 31, the exhibition has been dedicated to his memory; Sirani herself died at age 27.

Elisabetta Sirani (Bologna, 1638-1665), Allegory of Painting (Self-portrait?),
1658, Oil on canvas, Moscow, Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts

In her time, Sirani was known for her prolific activity and exceptional pace, working with an ease and an artistic command equally evident across her paintings, drawings and etchings.

The 33 works on display come from a range of public and private Italian collections, with the exception of Allegory of Painting, thought to be a self-portrait and on loan from the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. Sinori’s graphic work and paintings have both been the subject of numerous scholarly projects, beginning in the 1970s and up to the present day, particularly in examinations of Bolognese women artists within the larger context of gender studies.Curated by Roberta Aliventi and Laura Da Rin Bettina, with scientific coordination by Marzia Faietti, the Sirani show builds on the findings and themes of such projects.

Much of the exhibition focuses on the artistic context in which Sirani lived and worked, with a particular emphasis on her relationship to Medici Florence and ties to Cardinal Leopold de’ Medici, one of the most important art collectors of the era.

Painting and drawing like a great master: Elisabetta Sirani’s talents will be on view until June 10.
