RUN/Corri La Vita
September 25, 9.30am
Piazza del Duomo, Florence

corrilavita1

Nothing signals the arrival of fall in Florence quite like large-scale charity run Corri La Vita: Florence’s center fills up with thousands running, walking or even dancing their way through downtown to fight breast cancer. Participants in the 11.8km run or the 5.2km route pay a minimum of 10 euro and receive a snazzy blue T-shirt provided by Salvatore Ferragamo, which grants them free access to numerous local institutions on race day (noteworthy among them Palazzo Strozzi, Gucci Museum, Palazzo Medici Riccardi and the Bardini Museum). Registration is required on the website.

firenze-rivista

Twelve Florentine and Tuscan magazines and free presses will join forces for the second edition of Firenze RiVista, a festival celebrating Florence’s contemporary publishing scene, running from September 22 to 25. This year’s theme is “Futuro,” exploring what lies ahead for Italian publishing and the exchange of ideas in Florence. All of the evening events will take place at Forte di Belvedere, while daytime lectures, workshops, exhibitions and stands will be set up in the Galleria delle Carrozze in Palazzo Medici Riccardi. The events kick off on Forte di Belvedere’s dazzling terrace (7pm, September 22) with an open forum on The FLR. The Florentine Literary Review, the forthcoming publication showcasing contemporary Italian literature in both original language and in English. Alessandro Raveggi, Editor-in-chief of TheFLR, and Marco Badiani, Director of The Florentine, will speak, among others. For the full program of events, see the website.

Palazzo Strozzi pushes the envelope this season with “Libero,” a highly anticipated exhibition by China’s leading au courant artist Ai Weiwei. An international icon of resistance against censorship, Ai Weiwei is as well-known for his political activism as he is for his art. Works on display will include large-scale installations, sculptures, video and photography, spread throughout the entire complex: most notably, the Reframe installation will include 22 inflatable lifeboats hung on the Palazzo’s windows, alluding to the Mediterranean refugee crisis. For more information, see Palazzo Strozzi’s website.

Prolific Australian alt-rockers Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, active since 1983, will launch their brand-new album Skeleton Tree via cinema screenings all over the world on September 27 and 28. Fans and music critics across continents will share in hearing the songs for the first time, against the backdrop of the Andrew Dominik-directed feature film One More Time with Feeling. Exploring the at-times tragic process of writing and recording such a somber album–one from which no singles will be released–the film is interspersed with interviews and performance footage. See it at the Odeon in original language with Italian subtitles. For more information, see the Odeon website.
