Now there’s a hanging garden at the Palazzo Vecchio.
The Saturn terrace on the third floor of the city hall has taken on a new look for the summer. Open until September 25 and included in the ticket for the Palazzo Vecchio Museum, the green space features plants that grace historical archives dating to the sixteenth century such as citrus trees and fruit trellises, pomegranates and roses, vegetables, herbs, box and bay trees. Historians helped to craft the selection in a tribute to Eleanor of Toledo, wife of Cosimo I de’ Medici who effectively governed Florence during her husband’s exile. The ducal court at the time made the most of these orticini, small gardens, planted within the walls of their palazzo, designed for pleasure and relaxation.
Now it’s our turn to unwinding while enjoing the scents of the summer and taking in the restorative views over Florence.
