Just another 90 minutes, and Fiorentina’s fate, that is in which division, A or B, the team will be competing next season, will be decided.

An incredible error by Referee Rosetti in their last game might have resulted in Fiorentina losing the opportunity necessary to score a winning goal. Already ahead 1-0 against Roman team Lazio, Fiorentina was on its way to scoring another goal when a defensive player literally decided to play goalie and blocked the ball with his hands. Somehow the referee did not call the grave foul. If Fiorentina had received the foul it deserved, it might have scored the game’s winning goal. Futhermore, if the player had been removed from play, as he should have been according to the rules, Lazio, weakened by the loss of a player, might not have scored the subsequent game-tying goal.

There is nothing left to do now but hope for the best at the last game next Sunday in Florence. Fiorentina will be playing against Brescia (who is 2 points ahead of them and also fighting to stay in the A Series), but a simple victory against them will not be enough. A number of other teams playing on Sunday must also lose their matches in order to make room in the classification for Fiorentina. Fans will flock to stadiums next weekend, eyes fixed on the game and ears attached to their radios, hoping that somehow all of the needed results will fall into place.
