After an
initial face-to-face meeting, the process of community decision making
regarding changes to Pistoia’s piazza dello Spirito Santo is occurring
completely online.
On December
9, in a public event held in the square, city officials called on citizens to
provide ideas and suggestions for the future use and appearance of the public
space.
Pistoia
residents are asked to participate in decision making by submitting their ideas
for the city’s ‘virtual piazza’ online, via the City’s website at http://tinyurl.com/by732gb; on Twitter
(@Comune_Pistoia), though Facebook (http://tinyurl.com/bxe5q2p)
or by emailing info@comune.pistoia.it.
All
suggestions will be reviewed as the City drafts a new design for the town
square. Bidding on a public works contract for the new design of the square
will open in January, and construction is expected to start by the end of next
summer.
The call for
change to the square stems from a plan launched by the City to introduce
significant changes, such as creating more pedestrian-only zones and extending
the limited-traffic zones, to improve quality of life in the city centre.
City
officials also used Pistoia’s ‘virtual piazza’ to encourage citizens to submit
proposals and ideas for the future use of the so-called Cattedrale factory
building in the former Breda area.
