Images from security cameras in Pisa will soon be compiled on a single, secure website. The goal of creating the vast archive of images is to fight crime. With the footage as a reference, police will have more material with which to track down criminals and will be able to better coordinate investigations, a fact that city officials hope will serve as a deterrent to crime. ‘We hope to finish the project within a few weeks,’ said Francesco Tagliente, prefect of Pisa, who designed the project and put it into action shortly after his arrival in the city in June 2012.
‘The idea is simple and cost-free. It allows us to have geo-referenced data of all active cameras and know to which organisation or private person they belong, where they are installed and what they film. Once complete, the information from this archive will be made available to the Carabinieri, the Guardia di Finanza and the municipal police.’
Public administration centres, schools, universities, banks, supermarkets, hotels, restaurants, pharmacies, amusement arcades and many more are being contacted and asked to participate.
