If you are in Florence on January 6, 2014 for Epifania (Epiphany), there are a number of cultural activities available to you on this very special Monday.

FREE MUSEUMS

Although state museums are usually closed on Mondays, this year you can visit the following museums on Monday Jan 6 for free: Museo di Orsanmichele (10am to 5pm); and the Medici villas of Castello, Petraia, Poggio a Caiano and Cerreto Guidi.

The Last Suppers of Ognissanti and Sant’Apollonia are also open free, as is the Chiostro dello Scalzo on viaCavour.

SPECIAL MUSEUM OPENINGS

The Uffizi Gallery will also be open this Monday from 8.15am to 6.50pm. As per their normal “rotational” opening hours, Museo Nazionale del Bargello and the Museo di San Marco are open.

CALVACATA DEI MAGI

Epiphany is the day that the Three Kings visit Jesus Christ, a scene commemorated in numerous Renaissance paintings, and that was reenacted by members of a confraternity dedicated to the Magi (Kings) in that period. This procession has been dusted off in recent years and is put on by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore (by the Archdiocese and in collaboration with the City of Florence).

The historical procession, with horses, costumes, trumpeteers and flag throwers, leaves Piazza Pitti at 2:10pm, moving through the city to the Loggiato degli Uffizi and Piazza della Signoria, where the sbandieratori (flag throwers) do a number before everyone walks back to the Duomo around 3pm. Piazza Duomo will be the center of these celebrations, with a choir and speeches while waiting for the procession to arrive. For the day’s full calendar see here (in Italian).
