A stone’s throw from the Duomo, piazza SS.Annunziata will shortly become a hub of cinematic entertainment. Throughout July (July 7-31), the open-air cinema will screen a selection of 30 international films. Every evening at 9.30pm movies from Japan, Italy, Great Britain, Brazil, France and other countries worldwide will be on offer, all in their original language with Italian subtitles. If you’re Italian isn’t quite up to scratch (or your Finish, Japanese or French for that matter), there are plenty of English-language film evenings for our English-speaking community. Make sure you arrive early to grab a spot; entry is free, but judging from previous years, the square will fill up quickly.

In commemoration of the 450th anniversary of the death of Michelangelo this year, Tuesday evenings will be dedicated to Michelangelo and cinema, organised by the Accademia del Disegno.

Launching the open-air cinema programme, on July 7, enjoy the documentary Finding Vivian Maier, which delves into the life of the mysterious figure, now considered one of the most accomplished street photographers of the twentieth century.

Highlights also include The Agony and the Ecstasy from director Carol Reed, on July 8, A Season of Giants (La Primavera di Michelangelo) from Jerry London on July 14 and the American documentary, Marwencol on July 28, exploring the life and work of photographer Mark Hogancamp.

On July 16, the evening’s films are dedicated to Truman Capote, the famous American writer, journalist and actor. The free screening begins at 9.30pm with ‘With Love from Truman’, followed by ‘Truman Capote -In Cold Blood’.

On Sunday July 20, don’t miss a special cinematic appointment for Giuseppe Tornatore’s first English-language film, The Legend of 1900 (La Leggenda del Pianista). Tornatore will be there to introduce his film about a boy who was discovered in 1900 on an ocean liner, who then grows up to be a musical prodigy.
