Hours spent wandering museums with a little one in hand can seem like quite the task, yet when there’s a tailor-made “briefcase” for your open-eyed youngster to tear open, suddenly the many masterpieces become far more entertaining. Prompting a deeper engagement with the works on show and the sacred site itself, the Santa Croce complex and its significance become accessible through the thoughtfully selected and well-prepared materials, stimulating children’s curiosity and fostering a playful approach to art.

Kitted out
Opera di Santa Croce have curated a kit, with pocket-sized pencils included, to ensure a memorable visit for all ages. Upon entry, claim your free kit in either Italian or English, and get going at your own pace, with plentiful activities that also allow for post-visit productivity. Inside the packet, kids can find activities themed around the four elements, water, air, earth and fire, as well as a colourful map that will have them leading the way.

X marks the spot
A themed treasure hunt takes budding art historians through the symbols, allegories and fantastical creatures lining the walls, setting them off around the hallowed halls with excited determination. Upon completion, their effort is rewarded with a sticker set of everything they’ve just found, and a QR code that offers even more explanation.

Made for learning
If their curiosity continues, there are two booklets (in Italian) available on site and downloadable on the website with ample opportunities for them to test their knowledge and skills. In one, heraldry and coats of arms are outlined, detailing all the steps needed to create your own family’s stemma. A second booklet brings learners through the exceptional heritage of the site’s many monuments, leading to a deep understanding of the art and architecture. You’ll find yourself ticking off the tasks with just as much enthusiasm!

Tried and tested
Keen to put the kit into practice, I brought my son to Santa Croce one sunny Saturday. As soon as the package was placed in his hands, he couldn’t get past the ticket booth fast enough to explore its contents. He took on the treasure hunt with gusto, racing to the bookshop for his prize. A few days later, I asked him some questions to test the impact of the cleverly created kit, and he remembered more facts and figures than I did! We’re already planning our next visit.
