More than just a game: the impact of sports in education

International School of Florence ISF

At ISF, physical education and both competitive and non-competitive sports are more than just extracurricular activities—they are integral to the personal development of every student, from the earliest years through to high school graduation. The PE program is mindfully designed to support each stage of a child’s growth, promoting physical, emotional and social development through active engagement. This foundation nurtures confidence, healthy habits and teamwork. As students grow, the program evolves alongside them, presenting increasing challenges and opportunities to build discipline, resilience and leadership through a range of team and individual sports, including basketball, volleyball and football. Beyond regular PE classes, the school hosts all-community events like the annual Field Day and Cross-Country Day—joyful celebrations of movement and school spirit. This year’s Field Day, held on May 30, brought together students, families and staff in a colourful display of teamwork and enthusiasm as participants cheered on their peers and celebrated the vital role of physical education in the ISF experience.

Art in action: creativity, confidence + expression

At ISF, art is a journey of discovery, creativity and personal growth. From early years through high school, students are encouraged to explore and experiment across a variety of artistic media and techniques. Whether working with paint, clay, digital tools or mixed media, they learn both classical foundations and contemporary approaches to visual expression. ISF’s skilled art teachers guide students in developing their creative voice while promoting creativity and a sense of artistic identity. They often include Florence as inspiration, tapping into the city’s limitless wealth of artistic history. Regular exhibitions across both campuses offer students the opportunity to proudly showcase their work, gaining confidence and recognition as growing artists within the school community. The performing arts at ISF are equally inspiring. Theatre productions, dance showcases and drama workshops provide dynamic spaces for students to express themselves, build self-confidence and develop essential life skills, such as collaboration, public speaking and emotional awareness.  From the studio to the stage, ISF’s art and performing arts programs empower students to imagine boldly, communicate creatively and grow into confident, expressive individuals.

Let the music play!

International School of Florence ISF

ISF recognizes the power of music as a universal language—one that inspires creativity, builds confidence and brings people together. From early childhood through high school, the ISF music program provides students with inclusive platforms to explore their musical potential. The curriculum includes instrumental instruction, choral singing, vocal groups and ensemble performance opportunities. Whether joining the school’s Cantabile choir, picking up a new instrument or continuing one they already play, students are encouraged to express themselves musically and discover their individual sound. Exposure to international music genres broadens their understanding of cultures and styles, while performances throughout the year—at school concerts, talent shows and community events—celebrate student progress and enrich the school community. Dedicated music teachers promote musical literacy and nurture the confidence students need to try something new. From class time to extracurricular clubs, students of all experience levels are supported in exploring and expanding their musical abilities. Music is a highlight of major school celebrations and milestones, including graduation ceremonies and seasonal events, where students share their learning and achievements with the wider community.

IT + innovation: shaping digital citizens

In today’s fast-paced digital world, technological fluency is essential. ISF offers frequently updated IT programs that go beyond basic computer literacy. Students are given opportunities to learn coding, robotics, 3D design and digital media, preparing them not only for future careers but also to think critically about today’s increasingly important role of technology. The extracurricular tech clubs and competitions, such as Lego League and robotics tournaments, encourage students to collaborate, problem-solve and innovate. This fosters not just technical skills but also creativity, adaptability and a strong sense of digital responsibility.

A holistic education

At ISF, education goes far beyond academics—it’s about nurturing the whole child in a globally minded environment. The school’s extracurricular programs are essential opportunities for students to explore who they are, what they care about and how they connect with the world around them. Whether through sports, the arts, music or technology, students are encouraged to follow their interests, take creative and personal risks, and form meaningful relationships across cultures and backgrounds. Being part of an international community adds depth to every experience, fostering empathy, open-mindedness and global awareness. By supporting students in developing their talents and broadening their horizons, ISF prepares them not only for academic success but also for a life of confidence, curiosity and contribution—wherever their future takes them.
