In September, the International School of Florence’s Junior School Cantabile Choir experienced a moment that will stay with them for a lifetime. In the heart of Florence, in the magnificent Salone dei Cinquecento at Palazzo Vecchio, forty young singers aged 7 to 12 shared the stage with internationally acclaimed Israeli singer-songwriter Noa. The concert, entitled Re-Imagine Peace, was both a musical and cultural highlight, drawing attention to the enduring human call for harmony in an often divided world.

Led by their longtime choir director and music teacher, Tanja Kustrin, the Cantabile Choir filled the hall with youthful energy and clear, bright voices. Their performance alongside Noa was met with admiration and heartfelt praise from the artist herself, who described the children’s contribution as “inspiring.” For the young choristers, singing in such a storied hall—one that has borne witness to centuries of history, power, and debate—was a remarkable experience in itself. To do so in the company of a world-renowned artist added immeasurable depth and meaning.
During her performance, Noa paused to ask the audience a piercing question: “Stop! How much longer can this go on?” Her words echoed through the Renaissance hall, underscoring the concert’s theme and reminding all present of the urgent need for dialogue, reconciliation, and peace. For the children of ISF, this moment resonated strongly with what they are taught every day: that peace begins with understanding, respect, and empathy.
At the International School of Florence, peace is not a vague or abstract concept. As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, ISF is deeply committed to the IB’s mission of fostering intercultural understanding and developing young people who are principled, caring, open-minded, and reflective. The IB philosophy is built on the belief that education can—and must—contribute to a better, more peaceful world.
The choir’s participation in Re-Imagine Peace offered a powerful, tangible demonstration of these ideals. Music, like education, transcends boundaries. When forty children sing together, blending their voices into one, they embody unity through diversity—one of the core values of the IB. Each child brings a unique background, culture, and personality, yet together they create harmony. This mirrors what the IB seeks to achieve: a global community where differences are not erased but celebrated, and where collaboration builds bridges rather than walls.
The IB Learner Profile is often described as the heart of the program. Attributes such as being communicators, inquirers, and risk-takers are nurtured alongside the commitment to be compassionate global citizens. Singing on a stage as grand as the Salone dei Cinquecento requires courage and confidence, but also the willingness to work together toward a shared goal. These are precisely the skills and dispositions that the IB program cultivates—skills that will accompany ISF students long beyond their school years.
Moments like this performance also highlight the role of community in education. The ISF family—students, teachers, and parents—stands together in support of opportunities that enrich learning and character. The presence of so many parents at the concert was a testament to this spirit. Their encouragement and pride elevated the children’s experience, making it not only a school event but a family and community celebration. For that, ISF extends heartfelt thanks.
The evening in the Salone dei Cinquecento was more than a concert. It was a living expression of the power of music, the promise of education, and the possibility of peace. In a hall once dedicated to political power, the voices of children now rang out with hope, joy, and unity. The collaboration between the ISF Junior School Cantabile Choir and Noa reminded all present that peace is not simply an aspiration—it is a practice that begins with the youngest among us.
For the International School of Florence, it was a proud and unforgettable moment: a celebration of music, community, and the enduring mission of the IB program to help create a more peaceful world through education.
