Major works on the railway overpass at Ponte al Pino will bring significant disruption to Florence’s rail network between July 5-10 and July 27-30, as essential replacement works deemed no longer postponable by infrastructure manager Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) require a full closure of road and rail traffic in the area.

Train travel between July 5 to 10

The works are expected to cause inconvenience for commuters and travellers, particularly those relying on regional services into the city. Authorities are urging people to limit non-essential travel to Florence during the closure periods. Regional transport councillor Filippo Boni has also called for widespread use of remote working where feasible.

During the shutdowns, all southbound trains arriving in Florence, including regional commuter services, will terminate at Firenze Campo di Marte railway station. To allow the old bridge to be dismantled safely, rail traffic near Campo di Marte station will be suspended from 11pm on July 5 until 4am on July 10. The rail closure will be repeated between July 26 and 30 to allow the new bridge to be installed.

A free replacement shuttle bus will depart from a temporary stop outside via Masaccio 56 (“Masaccio Campo di Marte FS”) and run via piazza della Libertà to viale Strozzi, where passengers can connect with the tram network. Train ticket holders may also travel free of charge on tram line T1 between Strozzi Fallaci and Alamanni Stazione, and on Line T2 between Libertà Parterre and Alamanni Stazione. Passengers with regional tickets only may also use Line T1 free of charge between Strozzi Fallaci and Careggi.

The shuttle will operate from 6am to midnight from July 6 to 9, running every 24 minutes from 6–7am, every 6 minutes from 7–10am, every 8 minutes from 10am–8pm and every 12 minutes from 8pm until midnight.

Replacement shuttle buses will operate for high-speed rail passengers between Campo di Marte and the Montelungo area next to Platforms 17 and 18 at Santa Maria Novella station, following designated routes escorted by the municipal police. As a result, parking and traffic restrictions will be in force around Campo di Marte Station and the Montelungo area from 9pm on July 5 until 4am on July 10.

Officials stress that the shuttle services will not appear in Trenitalia’s digital ticketing systems, which will instead continue to display dedicated connections for high-speed rail passengers. A freephone number 800 570530 will be available from Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm.

During the works, the existing taxi rank outside Campo di Marte Station on via Mannelli will be temporarily relocated to make room for high-speed rail replacement buses. The temporary taxi rank will be on via Mannelli, between via Capo di Mondo and viale Mazzini, with access permitted only from via Capo di Mondo. Taxi pick-up and drop-off will take place at the new designated rank rather than directly outside the station.

How the roads and pedestrians will be affected

The pedestrian footbridge will be closed during the works whenever required by construction activities.

From 8pm on July 5 until 5am on July 10, via del Pratellino will be closed between via Pacinotti and via Campo di Arrigo to allow the bridge sections to be transported to a temporary storage area in the via del Pratellino car park. As a result, via Pacinotti and via Marconi will become dead-end streets. Traffic will be prohibited from viale dei Mille into via del Pratellino via via Pacinotti, while via Marconi will be closed between viale dei Mille and via del Pratellino. Exemptions will apply for authorized vehicles, including emergency services, police vehicles and traffic accessing private driveways.

The rail closure will also affect local bus services around Campo di Marte. Bus routes 12, 13, 17, 20 and the night route 22 will operate on temporary diversions due to road closures, while route 10 will run with a single terminus at Settignano. No changes are planned for bus routes serving Santa Maria Novella station.

Regional bus services will also be reorganized during the works. Between July 6-9 and July 27-30, coaches that normally depart from piazzale Montelungo will instead leave from Santa Caterina bus station, close to Santa Maria Novella station. The temporary change affects a number of regional routes serving destinations across the Florence metropolitan area. Some inbound services will terminate near the T1 and T2 tram lines rather than at Santa Caterina, while only selected services bound for the Careggi hospital area and the Novoli district will continue to serve Montelungo.

Bus services in Florence could also face delays and cancellations on Sunday, 5 July, due to a 24-hour company-wide strike called by the COBAS Lavoro Privato union. Urban services will operate as normal only during the guaranteed service windows of 4.15–8.14 am and 12.30–2.29 pm. Outside those hours, services, including ticket offices, will depend on staff participation in the strike.

Ticket prices to go up

In other train news, effective August 1, regional train tickets across Tuscany will increase in price by 5.6 per cent for single journeys. Authorities have stressed, however, that monthly and annual rail passes will remain unchanged, sparing regular users from the sharpest impact of the adjustment.
