Florence’s contemporary art scene is stepping out from behind closed doors with INTERNO 900, a new project bringing the public into the studios of 53 artists working in and around the city.
A collaboration between Museo Novecento and INTERNO – Studi Aperti in Firenze, the initiative will take place across three appointments: Saturday, September 26 from 5.30pm to 8pm; Sunday, September 27 from 10am to 1pm; and Friday, October 2 from 5.30pm to 8pm. For the occasion, artists will open their normally private workspaces, allowing visitors to see works in progress, discover materials and techniques, and meet the people behind the city’s contemporary artistic production.
INTERNO 900 grew out of INTERNO – Studi Aperti in Firenze, founded by artists Mariana Ferratto, Marco Rossetti and Alessandro Scarabello, to develop a network among artists living and working in Florence and its surroundings. Through regular studio openings, the project has sought to create opportunities for dialogue and exchange while gradually mapping the city’s diverse and constantly evolving contemporary art scene.
At the heart of INTERNO 900 is the idea that contemporary Florence should be understood not only through its museums and historic collections, but through the artists who have chosen to live and work here. While the city has long attracted artists keen to engage with its Renaissance heritage, relatively few have chosen to make Florence their permanent home.
INTERNO 900 aims to bring greater visibility to this community, highlighting the role of contemporary artists in ensuring that Florence remains a place of cultural production, experimentation and new ideas, rather than simply a city looking back at its extraordinary past.
