Train services along the Empoli–Pisa section of the Florence–Pisa railway line will be suspended for the entire weekend from Thursday, October 9 through Saturday, October 11, while scheduled maintenance is carried out by Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI).
The work is linked to preparations for the removal of the level crossing in Putignano, in the municipality of Pisa. Crews will carry out preliminary ground and railway platform consolidation ahead of the construction of a new road underpass. The work will also include maintenance on the metal bridge over the Era River and on the railway points at Pontedera.
With rail traffic suspended between Empoli and Pisa, both regional and long-distance services will be affected. Passengers can expect changes to departure and arrival times, cancellations, altered routes and services terminating at intermediate stations.
Long-distance Frecciarossa and Frecciargento trains operating on the Rome–Genoa route via Firenze Campo di Marte will be particularly affected. Some services will be cancelled, while others may be diverted between Rome and Pisa via Civitavecchia. These changes will also mean the cancellation of the Roma Tiburtina stop on affected services and longer journey times.
Some trains may also depart earlier than their scheduled time, so passengers are advised to check their journey before travelling. Further cancellations are planned for October 8 and 12.
Regional services will also be disrupted. Trenitalia trains operating on the Florence–La Spezia, Florence–Livorno–Grosseto and Florence–Campiglia/Piombino routes will have timetable changes, including earlier departures, as well as full or partial cancellations.
To help maintain connections, additional trains will operate between Florence and Pisa via Prato, Pistoia and Lucca.
