Reading
and playing promote health. That’s why Florence’s pediatric hospital recently
inaugurated a play centre and library with more than 1,000 titles, many of
which are in several different languages.

The project, Un
libro in Pediatria, leggere per sentirsi sollevati (‘A book in pediatrics:
reading to lighten up’), was financed by the regional government and created by
the Campi Bisenzio Biblioteca di Villa Montalvo, the Meyer Foundation, the
Paediatric Hospital Anna Meyer and the Helios Volunteer Association, in
collaboration with the library’s staff. The facility was created in memory of
Mauro Salvischiani with the funding of Monte dei Paschi di Siena Foundation,
the Autonomo Viola and the Niccolò Galli Foundation.

Designed
for both young patients and their parents, the centre provides ways to ease
long-term hospital stays and difficult treatments. In addition, local publisher
Giunti will hold workshops in the facility that will involve children from
local schools.
