This past week, a complicated new plan that hopes to reduce violence at the Artemio Franchi Stadium was finalised and set in place by Florence city officials and police authorities.
During matches, all access roads will now be blocked by road barriers. It will no longer be possible to park cars or scooters anywhere near the stadium. Fans of the visiting teams will be rerouted to avoid all possible confrontations with Fiorentina fans. Pre-game tickets will no longer be sold at nearby bars, but solely at the nearby Stadio Atletico. Finally, seven police checkpoints will be set up within the blocked areas around the stadium, and fans will be forced to pass through them in limited numbers.
Eventually, Sports Councillor Eugenio Giani hopes to add new electronic turnstiles to the stadium, as well as a new operating room equipped with 72 surveillance cameras, to better supervise and control violent fan activity.
