Overcoming differences, challenging gender stereotypes and embracing diverse family compositions and sexual orientations are the aims of Cuntala (meaning ‘tell it,’ in old Italian), a card-based game for children.
Each box of Cuntala consists of 44 cards in four categories of characters (light blue), objects (green), actions (orange) and characteristics (lilac), with identifying words in four languages: English, Italian, French, German and Spanish. To play, each player gets four cards. The first player chooses a card and starts telling a story inspired by the card he or she has picked.
There are no princes or princesses, only a diverse array of ordinary girls and boys; a similar array of men and women at work in a variety of fields; same-sex couples; and multicultural families.
Cuntala, developed by Barbara Imbergamo, founder of Sociolab, who holds a PhD in contemporary history and is a mother of two, is a crowdfunded project, supported by more than 150 people who contributed towards printing costs.
