According to the 2012 Federculture report, Italian fashion and design attracted more tourists than museums and monuments in Rome and other major cities in Italy.

Federculture is the Italian federation of public services, culture, tourism, sport and leisure.

‘Fashion and design are promoted superbly—something that is wholly lacking for the nation’s cultural assets,’ commented Marco Polillo, of Italy’s main business lobby Confindustria. ‘Italy’s major monuments, museums and art galleries need to join forces and market themselves effectively to the world in the way that Italy’s big fashion labels do.’

Spending by foreign tourists in the high-fashion sector has also been the positive note so far in the summer sales, which began on July 6.
