Florence recently woke up to find 1,200 trees throughout the city displaying signs offering ‘free hugs’ in various world languages. This was part of a campaign by the Florentine start-up Treedom to raise awareness for World Environment Day. The organisation encourages people to offset their carbon footprint by planting trees and giving them to others. Mayor Renzi and city councillors Bianca Maria Giocoli and Massimo Pieri praised the campaign, saying that it is ‘bringing a smile to the lips of our fellow citizens,’ as well as being a way to say ‘embrace the whole world.’
