A few weeks after the re-opening of the Livorno Aquarium, the complex was pleased to announce the arrival of its newest inhabitants: sharks. Although administrators of the aquarium had hoped to inaugurate a permanent shark tank during the first few weeks of August, they had to delay the opening of the exhibit until the chemical and biological processes of the shark tank waters had reached a proper, life-sustaining equilibrium.

The new aquarium features a wide variety of modern features, 65 mega-tanks, glass galleries and children’s sections, comprising an area of over 3,000 square meters offering both permanent exhibits and temporary attractions. Until spring 2011, Galileo’s Telescope: The Instrument that Changed the World, an exhibit curated by Giorgio Strano, will be open to all those holding general admission tickets. Since the aquarium’s re-opening, ticket sales have far exceeded those before the facility’s closure, several years ago. For information, see www.acquariodilivorno.it.
