Anselm Kiefer - Fallen Angels

German-born, Paris-based artist Anselm Kiefer debuts a curated collection of his impactful work at Palazzo Strozzi from March 22 to July 21. Religion, mysticism, poetry and philosophy meet in the paintings, sculptures, installations and photographs that explore connections between past, present and future.

Alessandra Ferrini 'Unsettling Genealogies'

Curated by Daphne Vitali, the works reflect on the 20th century and its repercussions in the present, with the multilayered project critically investigating the history of Italian cultural institutions. Visitors are taken through considerations of family stories, social class, collective memory and the construction of national identity.

DANCE

La Democrazia del Corpo

The dance project by Virgilio Sieni brings both dancers and audiences into closer awareness of their bodies and their capabilities, with Claudia Castellucci’s The new habit on March 2+3 bound to mesmerize viewers. On March 9+10, the programme features Dewey Dell’s I’ll do, I’ll do, I’ll do, with Cristina Kristal Rizzo Monumentum Da on March 16+17, and Francesco Giomi performing Foosball on March 24.

MYTHOLOGY

L’incanto di Orfeo

Orpheus, the Greek mythological figure, is explored in his past and contemporary interpretations, curated by Sergio Risaliti and Valentina Zucchi. 80 works from noted Italian and international museums, including the Louvre in Paris and the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, commence with Baccio Bandinelli’s sculpture of Orpheus in the main courtyard. The tragic myths linked to Eurydice, Hades and the Bacchae are also explored through printed volumes and musical works.

CINEMA

Cinema La Compagnia hosts Cinefilante, a film series for little ones that takes place until April 21. Aimed at 2 years and above, the screenings are at 5.30pm every second Sunday. On March 3, films dedicated to furry friends are shown, with short films with fathers on March 17 in anticipation of Father’s Day, and feathered friends on March 31 with animations by the Iranian studio Kanoon.

Emily Jones 'The Muddy Choir'

The London-born artist explores expectations and the dynamics of power, with visitors encountering a life-sized deer that, upon closer inspection, reveals itself to be not all that it seems, with reflections on community, agency, ecology and belief.

The Crucifix Collection

17th- and 18th-century Italian crucifixes are crafted into sculptures by Irish artist Jean O’Reilly Barlow. Rare minerals and gems dramatically alter the artifacts, representing messages of redemption and transformation.

PHOTOGRAPHY

Mimmo Jodice - Senza Tempo

Eighty photographs taken between 1964 and 2011 trace key features of Italian photography during this period, with subjects such as modern cities and culture, and reflections on the interweaving of the ancient and the contemporary. Jodice’s work, which will be on display in Florence for the first time, focuses on personal memories and experiences, particularly in his native city of Naples, and its rapport with ancient art and civilizations.

CIRCUS

La forza di attrazione

The fourth edition of the series curated by Instabile Chapiteau puts contemporary circus at the centre with March 9+10 seeing a “soufflé” of music and laughter, including clowning, music and juggling by Samovar and Banda Storta. From March 22 to 26, Oh! will be performed by the Catalyst Company, based on the work by the famous French author Hervé Tullet.

EASTER

Scoppio del Carro

The famous “Explosion of the Cart” takes place on Easter Sunday (March 31), with the flight of the mechanical dove from the firework-packed cart (“Brindellone”) journeying into the Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral and back in a highly anticipated moment that serves as an omen for the upcoming harvest upon its successful completion (…or otherwise!).

 

Easter religious services in English

Santi Apostoli Catholic Church holds the Mass of the Lord’s Supper in English at 6pm on March 28, with the Celebration of the Passion in English at 6pm on Good Friday, and the Stations of the Cross in Italian at 8pm. The Easter Vigil Mass on March 30 is held at 10pm in both Italian and English. On Easter Sunday, mass in English is at 10.15am and in Italian at 11.45am and 7pm.

 

St Mark’s English Church holds morning prayer during Lent at 9am on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, both in person and via Zoom. Holy Thursday is marked at 7pm on March 28, with the church open from midday to 3pm on Good Friday, and a service at 2pm. Easter Choral Eucharist is at 10.30am on March 31.

 

St James Episcopal Church holds a Festival of Cakes on March 10, the middle-most Sunday in Lent, to observe Laetare. The Palm Sunday service at 11am on March 24, Tenebrae in the Chancel is at 7pm on Holy Wednesday (March 24), Maundy Thursday is marked at 7pm on March 28, and services on Good Friday are at midday and 7pm. Easter Sunday on March 31 will involve a service at 11am, followed by a brindisi in the portico, and an Easter egg hunt.

André Butzer 'Liebe, Glaube und Hoffnung' and 'und der Tod ist auch ein Leben'

Distinctive works by the German artist come to the two spaces, curated by Sergio Risaliti, featuring elements of European expressionism and American popular culture, with names like Jawlensky, Munch, Kirchner, Henry Ford and Walt Disney playing a fundamental role in the formation of his style, with aspects also drawn from Cézanne and Matisse. Tom Hück – A modern apocalypse

Rebecca Olsen and Adriana Barrios curate works by the American printmaker best known for his large-scale satirical woodcuts that draw inspiration from José Guadalupe Posada and Francisco Goya, recalling altarpieces and triptychs, but with secular subjects that express dark humour and sharp social criticism.

Mixité

Toscana Produzione Musica organizes 10 live shows that vary from Afro psychedelia and Latin beats to Middle Eastern music and jazz. The series kicks off with Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness on March 1, an energetic group from Johannesburg, followed by La Chica’s Latin American sounds on March 17 and Naïssam Jalal, a French-Syrian flautist on March 24.

MARKETS

La Fierucola brings the best of biodiversity with crafts and homemade products by small-scale organic producers filling up stalls in popular piazzas. The Fierucolina is held in piazza del Carmine from 9am to 2pm on March 10 and in piazza Santo Spirito on March 17.

 

Pimp My Vintage brings their spring selection to The Social Hub (viale Spartaco Lavagnini 70-72) from 11am to 8pm on March 24, with free entry. Food, music, vintage and craft stands fill the spaces with everything from vinyl to jewellery and creative recycling by emerging brands and young creatives for sale.

SHOW

Daisy’s Dining

The weekly dinner show at House of Nine sees entertainment by Arachel Dolphie and the Daisy’s Cuban Band. Featuring special guest shows once a month, the dinner and show is open to all culinary and music lovers from 8pm every Friday until May, and every Thursday and Friday in May and June.

Tradizione in Movimento

The 32nd edition of the concert season by Musicus Concentus sees Manchester-born Alabaster dePlume (Angus Fairbairn) perform at 9.15pm on March 8.

Materia Prima

The 11th edition of the contemporary theatre festival boasts over a month of shows and new productions, curated by Murmuis. National and international artists make up the calendar that features the parody Batracomiomachia on March 2+3, Cuboteatro, Sid, Fin Qui Tutto Bene on March 8, and Zimmerfrie on March 22+23, in just a few of the shows performed this month, with some even provided with English subtitles.

CINEMA

Florence Korea Film Festival

The 22nd edition of the much-loved film fest sees special guests such as Kang-ho Song (of Parasite fame) and renowned director Kim Jee-woon, with the programme packing the best of South Korean cinema. Launched with the Italian premiere of Concrete Utopia, a disaster-thriller by Um Tae-hwa, the festival also features cultural events and masterclasses in a full immersion in Korean culture.

O flos colende

The sacred music festival consists of Lenten meditations conducted by Cardinal Giuseppe Betori around the Letters of Saint Paul, with music by the Cappella Musicale of the Florentine Cathedral on March 15 and Sacred Mount by Giovannangelo De Gennaro’s Calixtinus Ensemble on April 30.

The British Institute of Florence (lungarno Guicciardini 9) continue the Wednesday Lectures Series at 6pm with Valdo Spini discussing ‘The Vasari Corridor in the Liberation of Florence (1944)’ on March 6, ‘Dante’s Florence’ by Alexandra Lawrence on March 13, Lynn Catterson talks about ‘Finding, Fixing, Faking, Making: The dealer Stefano Bardini and the many hands of Bardini & Co.’ on March 20, and Giorgio van Straten looks at ‘Sono arrivati degli inglesi: The British presence in Florence through the images of the Alinari Archive’ on March 27. Alexandra Lawrence’s ‘Mystics, Magicians and Madmen of the Renaissance’ continues on March 14, while the Music al British series sees pianist Simone Tavoni on March 12, with jazz by Phelan Burgoyne and Martin Speake on March 26. Meet author Mark Anthony Jarman on March 19, in conversation with Simon Gammell, with readings from his new short story collection, Burn Man. A day trip to the Basilica Cafaggio winery is organized for March 28. Bridge for beginners and intermediates is held every Tuesday, and afternoon tea is from 4 to 5pm on Wednesdays.

 

SOTTO al British (lungarno Guicciardini 15) holds life drawing led by Tom J. Byrne from 7 to 9pm on Mondays. ‘Brainstorming for Writers’ with local author and translator Lori Hetherington is at 7pm on March 19. 

 

Alice Libreria holds ‘Sip and Paint’ on March 7+21, meeting in the bookshop to enjoy a glass of wine while painting and meeting new people. The cost of 20 euro covers the canvas, brushes, colours and a glass of wine.

 

Female Arts in Florence’s (borgo San Frediano 131R) programme includes an upcycling fashion session on March 2, print your own t-shirt on March 9, an embroidery course on March 16, and a holistic event featuring Tibetan bells on March 23.

 

Fondazione Mascarade Opera (Palazzo Corsini al Prato 56) holds Firenze è come un albero fiorito at 7pm on April 6, with the most loved arias and duets from the classical and bel canto repertoire of Rossini, Donizetti and Mozart, inspired by the bloom of spring. The artists involved are Luiza Willert (soprano), Sarah Hakobyan (mezzosoprano), Yuchen Pan (tenor) and William Desbiens (baritone). Access to the gardens and a glass of wine add to the experience.

 

The Social Hub (viale Spartaco Lavagnini 70/72) hosts brunch with live music and entertainment on Sundays from 11am to 4pm (except March 31). The ‘Spring on the Rooftop’ calendar commences on March 4, with cocktails and tarot reading from 6.30pm. Thursdays are dedicated to DJs and the Fiera art exhibition inaugurates at 6pm on March 2, with proud and ferocious creatures reimagined, including a talk at Libreria Alice (on-site) to dive deeper into the works.

 

Bio Fashion Lab (via Alfonso la Marmora) holds a Sashiko workshop on March 1, where you can explore the ancient Japanese art of decorative stitching. March 2 will see a patch workshop, allowing you to dive into the world of sewing and design, learning how to create unique and stylish pieces from scratch.

 

Bridge for beginners led by Gustavo De Santis is held at the Florence Bridge Club (via Pierluigi da Palestrina 33) every Tuesday from 5.45pm to 8pm, costing 10 euro per lesson. Email: gds.gustavodesantis@gmail.com.

 

Lìlà Toy Store (via Maggio 78R) holds a reading workshop on March 2 for children aged 5 years and above, a CLIXO construction workshop for 3 years+ and origami with Kyoko for 7 years+ on March 9. Reading and workshop for 2 years+ is on March 16, while Truccabelmancia follows on March 22.

 

An Easter Egg Hunt will be held on March 23, at 10.30am for 2-4 year olds and 4.30pm for 5-7 year olds, held by @american_party_toscana, @lilatoys.firenze and @jackies_bakery_florence. St Mark’s English Church holds a “bring and share” lunch every third Sunday of the month (March 17). Quiz night is March 9, with The Devil’s Passion performed on March 21+22. If interested in joining the St Mark’s Choir, contact revchrist007@gmail.com.

 

St James Episcopal Church holds a thrift shop sale on the last Wednesday of the month from 9.30 to 11.30am, with tickets available on the morning of the event. The on-site Children’s Lending Library (in English) will be open from 4.30 + 6.30pm on Thursdays, 10.30am + 12.30pm on Sundays.

 

The theatre company Teatro delle Donne performs Dante: Inferno to Paradise on the Goldoni Theatre stage at 8.30pm on March 14. The documentary made for an English-speaking audience is in anticipation of PBS’s broadcast later this month. The Steeplechase production was directed by Emmy Award-winning Ric Burns, starring Antonio Fassini as Dante, who will be at the event along with Riccardo Bruscagli and Christine Herring. Admission is free with open seating.

 

White Rabbit, Red Rabbit by Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour is a theatrical experiment and reminder of the transgressive and transformative power of theatre. Since its premiere in Edinburgh and SummerWorks in 2011, it has been translated into more than 30 different languages. Taking place at 7pm on March 13, it will be performed by Giulia Cavallini at Teatro delle Arti.

 

Impruneta Americana is a songwriter’s showcase with special guests Beth Nielsen Chapman and friends, held from 7 to 9pm on March 11 at Loggiato del Pellegrino 22, in Impruneta.
