I know the perfect person in need of a make-over Italian style. My sister, Kim Landry, is 29 and has never had a make-over in her life. She is from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and is in Florence studying at the Angel Academy of Art. She arrived a month ago and this is her first time being so far from home.

Kim’s quiet, intro-verted, and artistic, and because of her undemanding nature, she often goes unnoticed. She’s very family-orientated – the kind of sister who has always taken care of others before herself, always there to babysit the nieces, to give even if she doesn’t have enough for herself.  And we are so used to her being that way, that one year we all forgot her birthday!  She deserves to be taken care of and noticed, and she is long overdue for some pampering, especially now that she feels less safe in her surroundings and abilities.  When I saw this ad, I saw an opportunity to do something wonderful for her. Maybe you could help me, help her.

This make-over would also be an opportunity for her to jump into this Italian world that she seems to be so hesitant and cautious about. I think it would enrich her experience and perhaps give her a more grounded feeling of belonging. Plus I think she would have so much fun!

But the biggest reason I want my sister to have this make-over is because she doesn’t believe she’s beautiful.  And this breaks my heart. I want her to see what I see every day: a beautiful smile with curious eyes and a good heart. I know that a make-over is not a therapy session, but I think it could show her a glimpse of her own goodness (inside and out).

Anyhow, I’m sure that you have received many letters, and I have no doubt that there are many deserving people and that your decision will be a difficult one.  If nothing else, this letter alone has stirred up much in my heart, and I will go home more humble tonight, with an even greater awareness and appreciation of the gift of having Kim as my sister.

Sincerely

Shantelle Landry

Dear The Florentine,

I just wanted to send you a small note of my grand appreciation for all that you did for my sister. I know you went to a lot of trouble to make it all happen and I truly appreciate it. Not only did my sister look spectacular, but I believe, she felt spectacular. For the first time in years, I saw my sister “flirt” with the camera instead of shying away from it. It was incredible. I almost didn’t recognize the freedom of the spirit that stood before me. I felt that all the beauty I see in her everyday was highlighted and exploded so that everyone could see it (including her). Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!

You’ll be happy to know that as a result of that day she has vowed to do some self-pampering and has already gone shopping for herself at Zara’s. She also plans to go back to the International Studio to get a “top up” before Christmas. That day and evening was very special for both of us. For her because she got a makeover; for anyone that’s obviously special. And for me because I got to see my sister smile, truly smile and enjoy the beautiful person she is.

Thank you again for doing what I couldn’t. For making it all possible.

Sincerely,

Shantelle Landry

P.S. Everyone back home saw the pictures we sent and now they all want to come to Italy and get their own makeovers! They love them!
