BE FEMINIST/Festa della Donna

March 8

Throughout Italy

 

Italy celebrates International Women’s Day (see pages 16 and 17). Remember the women in your life by giving them a sprig of mimosa blossom! On March 7, join the Advancing Women Artists Foundation and Syracuse University for a Writers’ Marathon to generate Wikipedia entries spotlighting women artists; see page 16. On March 8, commemorate the day by joining the Santa Croce in Pink tour, which begins at 10am and costs 25 euro, including a copy of the book Santa Croce in Pink: Untold Stories of Women and their Monuments.

 

BE RENAISSANCE/Re-discovering Michelangelo

Accademia Gallery, via Ricasoli 58–60, Florence

 

To commemorate the 450th year of Michelangelo Buonarroti’s death, the Accademia hosts the Ri-conoscere Michelangelo exhibition, exploring the world-famous artist through leading photographers, sculptors and painters who reference Michelangelo in their works. Highlights include Kim Ki-duk’s 2012 Pietà and Luca Pignatelli’s Sculture. For more information, see www.unannoadarte.it.

 

FLAVOURFUL/Taste

Stazione Leopolda, Florence

 

Florence goes food-crazy for three days! Taste is a fair dedicated to food excellence and lifestyle, attended by top figures from the international gastronomic and catering worlds, as well as a public of passionate foodies. GO MODERN/Radical Femininity

Part of the Contemporary Art Space programme, the Femminilità Radicale exhibition displays works of art by three rarely seen twentieth-century artists: American Lee Lozano, Pole Alina Szapocznikow and Belgian Evelyne Axell, concentrating on the body as a means of criticism. ART/Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino

March 8–July 20

Palazzo Strozzi, Florence

 

The exhibition Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino. Diverging Paths of Mannerism explores works of art from two of Tuscany’s most original and unconventional painters. Each with his own unique style, they forged new ways of interpreting art in a period of the sixteenth century, which Giorgio Vasari dubbed ‘the modern manner.’ For more information, see www.strozzina.org

 

 

POP/Elisa

Nelson Mandela Forum, viale Pasquale Paoli, Florence

 

Renowned Italian singer Elisa performs on the Tuscan leg of her ‘Anima Vola’ tour, with hits from her new album. Some of her most recent songs were written in collaboration with Florentine favourite Ligabue, Tiziano Ferro and Negramaro’s Giuliano Sangiorgi. BE CARNIVAL/Frittelle festivals

Until March 30: every Saturday, 10am–7pm, every Sunday, 8.30am–10pm

NATURE/Personal Landscape

Anni Kinnunen’s photography exhibit, Personal Landscape, depicts the relationship between man and nature. The Finnish artist is interested in the human need to control and manipulate nature, concentrating on environments where nature has taken over. Read more at www.saci-florence.edu.

 

 

BE BOLD/Stomp

March 21–23

Teatro Verdi, via Ghibellina 99, Florence
