Last year, via Romana’s Christmas decorations featured umbrella lights; this year the spotlight is on the bicycle.
Festive and charming, the holiday lights, which are annually chosen by business owners along via Romana, generally have a political agenda, too.
Antonella Ciullo, a representative of the Boboli business owners’ association, commented at the presentation, ‘Above all else, they are a manifesto. Like [last year’s] umbrella, the bikes seek to communicate an idea … The 10 bikes and 90 wheels along the Oltrarno street give a clear message of the need to restore to the area the ecological dimension.’

Business owners along via Romana have devised plans for the busy street, which has been struggling with smog, traffic and the passage of large tourist buses for years.
