STYLE / MARKET / Vintage Selection

Everyone from the Pitti glitterati to curious collectors is expected to flock to this year’s special ‘silver’ Vintage Selection. Equal parts marketplace, showcase and celebration, this is the 25th edition of the vintage fashion-focused event. To mark the occasion, the entire venue will be decked out in silver décor. Beyond sifting through the eclectic clothes and accessories on display and for sale, vintage fiends and other visitors can enjoy workshops with fashion experts, aperitivos, live music and plenty of chic people-watching. TRIVIA / Pub Quiz night!

Time to put your ‘thinking cap’ on! Finnegan’s famous pub quiz night is back. Gather a group of friends, but choose your companions wisely! Teams are limited to 5 people, and to conquer the competition, you’ll probably want a history buff, a pop culture junkie, a sports fanatic and a geography whiz on your side. Put your heads together and enjoy 7 rounds of questions on a variety of topics. Members of the top three teams will take home prizes—and there are also several chances to win spot prizes throughout the evening! 

 

CONCERT / Firenze Capitale!

2015 is all about Firenze Capitale, and this concert is just the beginning! The concert marks 150 years since Vittorio Emanuele II proclaimed Florence the capital of Italy. This monumental event, which the newspapers of the day called ‘unexpected,’ marked the beginning of several changes to the city, many of which were inspired by Paris’s influence. The Maggio Musicale choir and orchestra will perform, recapturing the spirit of the day.

 

 

LECTURE / A Future for the Past

Is there a ‘lost Leonardo’ masterpiece hidden in plain sight? A fascinating theory about where it might be located and how it might be tracked down has held one scientist’s attention for more than 30 years. This talk will tell the exclusive story of the quest to make this astounding art-world discovery. Lecturer Maurizio Seracini is the director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Science for Art, Architecture and Archaeology at the University of California San Diego’s California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology. Seracini has been a trailblazer in applying analytical technology in his field, having studied over 2,500 works of art and historic buildings. A light reception will follow the lecture.

 

 

HORROR / CINEMA / Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari

February 4,8pm. British Institute, Harold Acton Library, Lungarno Guicciardini 9, Florence This iconic German Expressionist film is not for the faint of heart! Influential American film critic Roger Ebert called it ‘the first true horror movie.’ A silent film renowned for its remarkable sets and cinematography, Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari is said to have invented the twist ending. Titular character Dr. Caligari is a hypnotist who meets a sleepwalker at a carnival—with chilling results.
