The ever-growing demand for biological bites is met at the certified organic gelateria, Edoardo. With prime locations at piazza del Duomo 45R and the recently opened store just beyond Ponte Vecchio on via Guicciardini 9R, the authentic, artisanal gelato is without any chemicals, GMOs or colourants, offering both quality and sustainability.
With the vast variety out there, it can be tricky to discern which gelateria is going to be the most memorable. Co-owner Carlo makes it clear: “I wouldn’t be so presumptuous as to say that my gelato is the absolute best to be found, but I will say that our cones are!” Handmade in the moment, only fresh ingredients are used to make the perfectly crisp cones and wafer cups, which are a whole other level in terms of flavour and crunch. “With flour from the Val d’Orcia and local ingredients where possible, the cones (in the rare case of an excess) would need to be thrown away after two days given the freshness of the ingredients, while those you see on most countertops could have been made two years ago.” If you’re lucky enough to pass by when they’ve just been spiraled out of the pan, you can relish the satisfying combination of the warm cone with the cool gelato for a sensational experience.

Another point of difference for the firm favourite is that their flavours change with the seasons, meaning plenty of reasons to visit all year round. From honey and lavender to Chianti vino, pumpkin, and ricotta and fig flavours, the menu entices. Lucky enough to try the cinnamon flavour while my colleague sampled the almond and orange, it’s true what an Edoardo fan said: “It tastes and feels healthy, even though, of course, it’s gelato!” That’s down to the quality of the ingredients that results in divine creaminess and just enough sweetness.

The pale green palette of the Ponte Vecchio store is reminiscent of a dairy farm, with little details like ladybirds and raw materials on display as reminders of the natural gelato that awaits in the covered vats. Of late, social media has done a good job educating gelato hunters as to why these lidded containers are what you should be seeking, rather than the brightly coloured gelato mountains that, while good for your Instagram feed, are less likely to result in an unforgettable and authentic gelato.

Vegan and gluten-free needs are also catered to, with dedicated flavours ensuring there’s something for everyone. Crêpes and hot chocolate are offered during the winter months for an extra element. There’s also the option of getting your goods delivered if you have a special occasion or a craving for Edoardo’s unique flavours like salted pistachio or sesame. Ultimately, though, the gelato is best appreciated while enjoying a classic stroll through the city centre with an enormous cone in hand, making the sites seem even sweeter.
