Tuscans will decide who will manage their region on Sunday, October 12, and Monday, October 13, 2025. The election will only concern the new president of the region and the 40 new regional councillors.

Italian citizens residing in Tuscany or those residing overseas who are registered with A.I.R.E. are eligible to vote.

Voting will take place from 7am to 11pm on October 12 and from 7am to 3pm on October 13. If none of the candidates receive 40 per cent plus one of the votes, there will be a runoff two weeks later, on October 26 and 27, to choose between the two who received the most votes.

Who are the candidates for the regional elections in Tuscany

Eugenio Giani has already confirmed that he intends to run for re-election as the Democratic Party candidate, while the centre right candidate, Alessandro Tomasi, currently Mayor of Pistoia, has also been announced. Other candidates include Antonella Bundu for Toscana Rossa, Carlo Giraldi (Forza del Popolo), Enrico Zanieri (Italian Communist Party) and Hubert Ciacci (Democrazia Sovrana e Popolare). However, for the names to become official, we will have to wait until the electoral lists close on September 12.

Eugenio Giani has been Regional President of Tuscany since 2020, when he was elected with nearly 49% of the vote. He is the Democratic Party candidate and also has the backing of the Greens, Italia Viva, Italian Socialist Party, Republican Party, +Europa and 5 Star Movement. Born in Empoli in 1959, he has enjoyed a long political career as a Florence city councillor and former president of Florence City Council before moving to regional level. He is a sports lover and has an encyclopaedic memory of Tuscany.

Alessandro Tomasi has been the Mayor of Pistoia since 2017 and is also the regional coordinator of the centre-right Fratelli d’Italia political party. For his candidacy to become President of Tuscany, he also has the backing of the Lega, Forza Italia and Noi Moderati. Born in Pistoia in 1979, this is his second term as mayor of his hometown, having won re-election with over 51% of the vote. He is a fan of American literature, rock music and collects comic books.

Antonella Bundu is gaining signatures to become the Toscana Rossa civic list (Rifondazione Comunista, Potere al Popolo, Possibile) candidate, as an alternative to the centre left and centre right, standing for peace, healthcare, the environment and labour rights. Born in Florence in 1969, she grew up in Sierra Leone before moving to Liverpool and returning to Tuscany in 1989. She ran as mayor of Florence in the 2019 elections, making her the first Black woman to run for mayor of a major Italian city, gaining more than 7% of the vote and becoming a member of the city council for the Sinistra Progetto Comune group. She works as a translator and interpreter as well as leading many intercultural projects.
