The marble façade of the ancient Badia Fiesolana has become very unstable and large segments of the building are at risk of collapse.
Officials from the Fiesole town council have explained that the fire brigade was called for when, after an inspection of the structure, it was found that some pieces of the façade were crumbling, including a cornice rim stretching 20 metres. The municipal police of Fiesole subsequently arrived on the scene to block off the area for safety reasons. A beam or supporting device is to be erected to help stabilise the façade.
Don Serigio Severini, head of the church, was also informed of the problem given that the dangerous sections lie above the entrance of the Badia Fiesolana.
