Leading tourism industry website Trip Advisor released its Travellers’ Choice rankings for 2014 on June 17, and the Siena Cathedral took top honors for Tuscany. The church was listed at number two in the Top 10 Landmarks in Italy category, outranked only by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome. In addition to the Italian rankings, it made it into travellers’ top ten favorite European landmarks.

Architecturally, the monument is one of the finest examples of Italian Romanesque-Gothic cathedrals. It houses works by some of the most important Western artists in history, from Donatello and Michelangelo to Bernini. Over one million people visit the cathedral annually, and from August 18 until October 27, visitors will have the opportunity to view the cathedral’s magnificent mosaic floor if they participate in the ‘Gate of Heaven’ itinerary.
