On April 25, Liberation Day, Florence saw a swarm of bees making a break for freedom. Their hive was most likely disturbed or destroyed, and the swarm, in search of a new place to set up home, gathered inside Florence’s carousel in piazza della Repubblica, where the colony took up residence in and around the golden crown on top of one of the rides. The area was cordoned while a beekeeper painstakingly coaxed the bees into a special wooden box filled with honey and carried the hive off to safety.
