The beautiful marble floors of Siena’s Duomo will be uncovered from August 18 till October 27. Normally hidden by protective carpet, the marble inlay floors were described by Vasari as the ‘most beautiful, grand and magnificent’ ever to be made, and were completed between the fourteenth and nineteenth centuries based on designs by such artists as Sassetta, Domenico di Bartolo and Domenico Beccafumi.

The cathedral, and it’s ‘Porta del cielo’ tour of the recently opened passageways below the ceiling, will also be open late for tours on Saturdays during this period, from 8pm till midnight, providing a unique viewpoint for the seldom uncovered floors.

See www.operaduomo.siena.it for more information – and below for some beautiful photos of the floor!
