Wednesday, January 22, 2014 is Museum Selfie Day around the world. A group of museum professionals called Culture Themes has issued a world-wide call to post selfies in our favourite museums. ‘The idea behind Culture Themes,’ explains Mar Dixon, one of the project’s organizers, ‘is to have a positive event once a month on Twitter to highlight the fun and ‘unstuffiness’ of museums/culture.’
In spirit of this day, The Florentine has compiled a list of museums in Florence inside which visitors are welcome to take photos (within the limits of decency, and with discretion please).
The following museums allow photography without flash:
Museo di Palazzo Vecchio
Cappella Brancacci
Museo di Santa Maria Novella
Fondazione Salvatore Romano
Museo Stefano Bardini
Museo dell’Opera del Duomo
The Baptistry
Boboli Gardens
Santa Croce (Church and museum)
Museo di Storia Naturale:
Antropologia (closed wednesday)
Geologia, Mineralogia (closed wednesday)
Zoologia La Specola
in Prato: the Museo del Tessuto is permitting photography specially for #museumselfie day in all except the historic textiles area (for reasons of conservation).
Post your photos with #MuseumSelfie and you might even be featured on the Museum Selfies Tumblr managed by museum professional Alli Burness, who regularly posts users’ photos from around the world as well as reflections on the growing phenomenon.
If you’re interested in this kind of nexus between Museums and the Digital world, take a look at the upcoming English-language conference in English: Museums and the Web Florence 2014.
Disclaimer: Each of these museums was contacted to confirm that the use of photography inside the building is permitted. The above information was correct at the time of publishing. The Florentine holds no responsibility for misinformation or misuse of cameras inside these museums.
