Dumbed down gritty realism down on the ranch (Wyo) in rapidly
declining Lasse Hallstroms An Unfinished Life, and unpretentious (i.e
clich-ridden) reconciliation movie not afraid of pain, suffering and trauma,
but perhaps too fond of melodrama and sentimentality, (and bears). Widowed Jean
(surreally immaculate Jennifer Lopez) and her daughter turn up at father-in-law
Gilkysons (Robert Redford) place because they have nowhere else to go. Stalked
variously by a violent abusive boyfriend and the bear (with something of a sore
head) the dysfunctional family (including farmhand Mitch, an irritating Morgan
Freeman) learn to function and get on, and the bear (Bart, the movies best
performer) lives happily ever after.
