Woody Allen’s latest concerns married couples Alfie and Helena and their daughter Sally and her husband Roy, whose passions, ambitions, and anxieties lead them into trouble and out of their minds. Alfie leaves Helena for a free-spirited call girl, Helena gives her life over to a charlatan fortune teller, Sally develops a crush on her handsome boss, and Roy falls for a mystery woman. ‘Good and very pleasurable provided you know what you’re getting into, which is a comic roundelay of amorous ambitions and delusions-punctuated by wistful old ballads like “If I Had You”-that lead mostly but not entirely to disaster’ (Wall Street Journal). ‘Much of the writing is good, and the acting is superb, but the constant wrangling wore me out at times’ (New Yorker). ‘Fitfully amusing and nearly saved by its distinguished cast’ (Variety).
