Clevland vs Wall Street DISTRIBUTION
CYCLE

Italian
director Nanni Moretti will introduce Clevland vs Wall Street, a
documentary shown at Cannes on the devastation caused by foreclosures
as a result of the financial crisis features a mock trial in which
Wall Street is the defendant. On January 11, 2008, hired by the City
of Cleveland, lawyer Josh Cohen and his team file a lawsuit against
21 banks, which they hold accountable for the foreclosures that have
left their city in ruins. Step by step, one witness after another,
the film dissects the mechanisms of subprime mortgage loans, and from
an everyman’s perspective tries to humanise the phenomenon and
learn some lessons. A universal fable about capitalism. (in English
with Italian subtitles)

CARS 2

In
the sequel, star racing car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) and the
incomparable tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy) take their
friendship to exciting new places when they head overseas to compete
in the first ever World Grand Prix to determine the world’s fastest
car. But the road to the championship is filled with plenty of
potholes, detours and hilarious surprises when Mater gets caught up
in an intriguing adventure of his own: international espionage. ‘The
rare sequel that not only improves on but retroactively justifies its
predecessor, this lightning-paced caper-comedy shifts the franchise
into high gear with international intrigue, spy-movie spoofery and
more automotive puns than you can shake a stickshift at, handling
even its broader stretches with sophistication, speed and effortless
panache’ (Variety).

HARRY POTTER MARATHON

As
the eighth and final film in the series is released, cinemas around
the world are screening Harry Potter marathons to celebrate the last
blast and remind viewers of what has gone so far. The Odeon marathon
has three parts:

Thurs,
July 7

Harry
Potter Marathon, Part 1

Harry
Potter and the sorcerer’s stone (2001)

The
movie series begins with 11-year-old Harry rescued from his abusive
uncle and aunt and whisked off for his first year at Hogwarts to
learn about wizardry. The first of Chris Columbus’ two Potter
movies had its name changed in the USA in the belief that Americans
wouldn’t know what a sorcerer was. This movie has grossed just
under 1 billion US dollars. ‘The script is faithful, the actors are
just right, the sets, costumes, makeup and effects match and
sometimes exceed anything one could imagine’ (Variety).

Harry
Potter and the chamber of secrets (2002)

Columbus
also directed HP2, in which Harry on his summer break with muggles
ignores warnings not to return to Hogwarts, only to find the school
plagued by a series of mysterious attacks and a strange voice
haunting him. ‘Brimming with invention and new ideas, and its
Hogwarts School seems to expand and deepen before our very eyes into
a world large enough to conceal unguessable secrets-What a glorious
movie’ (Roger Ebert)

Harry
Potter and the prisoner of Azkaban (2004)

In
Harry’s third year at Hogwarts; not only does he have a new teacher
for ‘Defence Against the Dark Arts,’ but there is also trouble
brewing. ‘Who would think Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
could be an art film? Thanks to director Alfonso Cuaron, a dazzling
storyteller with a keen eye for whimsical detail, the third film in
the Potter franchise is a visual delight’ (USA
Today).

Mon,
July 11

Harry
Potter Marathon, Part 2

Harry
Potter and the goblet of fire (2005)

Mike
Newell got one shot, HP4. In his fourth year of wizard school, Harry
finds himself selected the underage competitor in a dangerous
multi-wizardry-school competition. ‘Ralph Fiennes’ Voldemort may
be the greatest screen performance ever delivered without the benefit
of a nose; certainly it’s a performance of sublime villainy’ (New
York Times)

Harry
Potter and the order of the phoenix (2007)

David
Yates secured the franchise with HP5. Their warning about Lord
Voldemort’s return scoffed at, Harry and Dumbledore are targeted by
the Wizard authorities as an authoritarian bureaucrat slowly seizes
power at Hogwarts. ‘Whatever happened to the delight and, if you’ll
excuse the term, the magic in the Harry Potter series? As the
characters grow up, the stories grow, too, leaving the innocence
behind and confusing us with plots so labyrinthine that it takes a
PhD from Hogwarts to figure them out’ (Roger Ebert).

Harry
Potter and the half-blood prince (2009)

As
Harry Potter begins his sixth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft
and Wizardry, he discovers an old book marked mysteriously ‘This
book is the property of the Half-Blood Prince’ and begins to learn
more about Lord Voldemort’s dark past. ‘But the story is, still
and all, only a pause, deferring an intensely anticipated conclusion.
And it’s in that exquisite place of action and waiting that this
elegantly balanced production emerges as a model adaptation’
(Entertainment
Weekly).

Harry
Potter Marathon, Part 3

Harry
Potter and the deathly hallows: part I (2010)

As
Harry races against time and evil to destroy the Horcruxes, he
uncovers the existence of three most powerful objects in the
wizarding world: the Deathly Hallows. ‘Director David Yates spins
the series’ most expansive, structurally free-form chapter
yet-lumbering and gripping by turns, and suffused with a profound
sense of solitude and loss’ (Variety).

Harry
Potter and the deathly hallows: part II (2011)

The
end is here. In the epic finale, the battle between the good and evil
forces of the wizarding world escalates into all-out war. The stakes
have never been higher and no one is safe. But it is Harry Potter who
may be called upon to make the ultimate sacrifice as he draws closer
to the climactic showdown with Lord Voldemort. The eighth and last
movie in the series ends the saga that in books and movies has
occupied millions around the world. What will we do next?
