Sant’Ambrogio is enjoying a moment. On the same day that the market resumed full operativity with the stallholders returning to their outdoor spaces beneath new roofing, Altrocanto (via della Mattonaia 3A) threw a party to mark the opening of the deli/eatery in the sprawling building formerly known as C.BIO.

While the flamethrowers aren’t a permanent fixture, the delicatessen and bakery most definitely are there to stay. Following a sizeable investment to double the available premises, Alessio Fantechi and his team aim to provide a warm and welcoming neighbourhood hub for locals, students and travellers alike, as reflected in the pop vibe and greenery.

Comfort food is on the menu, both as takeout and served in the restaurant. The beef meatballs with capers are an immediate signature dish, a proud vestige of C.BIO, while Tuscan chef Elisa’s artichoke lasagne and peposo stew are equally delicious.

Don’t judge the wine shelves as they currently stand. Fantechi’s roots will soon be on show in a selection of niche wineries from Chianti Rufina. Plus, look out for the events. Tastings, book presentations, live music and community happenings are on the cards for this lively new addition to Sant’Ambrogio.
