What if one of the most consequential political figures of the 20th century is someone you have never heard of? In 2017, a trip to Florence led us to discover a man (and a story) that captivated us: Giorgio La Pira.

Giorgio La Pira

Millions of people flock to Florence each year for its art, cathedrals and Renaissance legends, but few know the story of the professor, anti-fascist, advocate for the poor, multi-term mayor, champion of justice and deeply devout layman who became an unlikely diplomatic force during the Cold War and Vietnam War. La Pira’s contributions were not limited to Florence and Italy; they extended to the world.

After publishing the first English-language book on him, Tied by a Florentine Knot: The American Press on Giorgio La Pira, we are now writing, producing and directing a feature-length documentary on his extraordinary life. This film is more than a historical portrait. It’s a timely exploration of political courage rooted in faith, humility and civic leadership. Through interviews with those who knew him and scholars who have studied his work, we trace how La Pira’s spiritual convictions fueled concrete action, from housing the poor and confronting fascism to engaging Communist leaders and building improbable alliances across ideological divides.

In an age defined by polarization and distrust, La Pira offers a bracing counterexample. This film is for anyone who believes that faith and governance, idealism and diplomacy, and integrity and leadership can coexist. This documentary brings his story to light and carries Giorgio La Pira’s message of peace far beyond Florence to a world that still urgently needs it.
