Oggetti della fuga – Escape Objects

Oggetti della fuga (Escape Objects) is an intriguing project by Massimo Ricciardo and Thomas Kilpper in the photo library of the Kunsthistorishches Institute in Florence. Objects brought by refugees in their migration to Europe are preserved in this haunting exhibit. Arriving in Italy from Africa or the Middle East via boat, their journeys on the high seas were accompanied by their mobile phones, diaries, photo albums, religious texts and other personal effects, clung to in times of danger.

On January 16, 2020, Massimo Ricciardo presented a selection of these objects in the photo library of the Kunsthistorisches Institut in Florence. Curated by Costanza Caraffa and Almut Goldhahn the items capture the fears and hopes of those undergoing journeys which they hoped would bring them to a better life.
