ALL GOOD THINGS
A true-crime drama inspired by the real-life case of Robert Durst, who was suspected of murdering his wife, Kathie, after she vanished without a trace in 1982, one of New York’s most sensational unsolved crimes. Warned by his father that his prospective bride would never fit into the high life, the heir apparent marries her anyway and things start to fall apart. ‘A potent and provocative movie that will keep you up nights’ (Rolling Stone).
TRIBECA FIRENZE/TUSCAN SUN FESTIVAL
June 13 to 17 @ Odeon cinema
Among the highlights for English-language speakers: Wagner’s Dream(2012), a documentary about the Metropolitan Opera’s production of the Ring cycle. Alan Cumming and Garret Dillahunt star as the same-sex couple who adopt a mentally handicapped child and then face the prejudice and inflexibility of the justice system in Any Day Now, audience favourite at Tribeca 2012. Another Tribeca prize-winning documentary is Nisha Pahuja’s multilingual The World Before Her, focusing on the role of women in contemporary Indian society. Stephen Frears’ 1988 Dangerous Liaisons features John Malkovich in one of his best performances as the wicked vicomte in this famous adaptation of Choderlos de Leclos’s epistolary novel. Liliana Cavani’s 2002 English-language Patricia Highsmith adaptation Ripley’s Game also stars Malkovich, this time as Tom Ripley himself, devising a devilish and murderous plot. The Zen of Bennettis Unjoo Moon’s reverent documentary on the life and works of immaculate crooner Tony Bennett. Benjamin Dickinson directs his debut drama First Winter, in which a group of Brooklynites heads to the frozen countryside and works out survival strategies. Rust and Bone, which made quite a stir at this year’s Cannes Festival, (in French with English and Italian subtitles), is an unusual love story that challenges many prejudices about disability and the power of love. For dates and times, see the events listing or www.tuscansunfestival.com.
